Registered Nurse - Orthopedic Spine Unit
Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Description
- Orthopedic Spine Unit: 26-bed, telemetry-capable unit
- Specialized care for post-operative spinal surgery patients (laminectomies, spinal fusions, discectomies)
- Focus on pain management, physical therapy, and mobility support
- Patient ratio up to 1:6, normally 1:5
- Must have strong cardiac experience
- Unit occasionally manages ER overflow patients for Observation and MS/Telemetry
Floating Policy
- Agency staff must float to other Prisma Health units/campuses as needed due to census
- Floating only to units where staff are qualified and competent
- Floating policy must be signed and is renewed annually
Required Certifications & Licenses
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): AHA or ARC only, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA, RQI, or ARC only, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for pediatric units and ER, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required for NICU, Pediatrics, and some RRT roles, AHA only, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course): Required for ER/ED and Pediatric ER travelers, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring): AWHONN required as applicable
- Tech Certification (National): Must be current and valid within 30 days of start
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement: HIPAA and OSHA/TJC training, valid and not expiring within 90 days of start
- STABLE: Required for L&D and NICU RN travelers, valid during assignment
- ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course): Required for ER and Pediatric ER, valid and not expiring during assignment
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) or CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute): Required for ER/ED, Pediatric ER, Behavioral Health RNs, valid for entire assignment
- NIH Stroke Certification: Required annually for ICU, Neuro ICU, CVICU, SICU, MICU, MS/Tele, Telemetry, Stepdown, ER, Pediatric ER, PCU, PACU, Observation Unit, LTACH, IR, and Endoscopy
- State License: Primary source verification required, no pending actions, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
- NURSYS Verification: Must show all licenses and authorization to work in South Carolina, valid within 30 days of start
- IV Certification: Required for LVN/LPN candidates, does not expire
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication): Required for RNs in specified units, must pass with 84% or higher, two attempts allowed
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute): Required for ER/ED, Pediatric ER, Behavioral Health, valid and not expiring within 30 days of start
Required Background Checks & Compliance
- 7-year background check within 12 months of start, including SS trace, aliases, state/county searches, FACIS III, sex offender, international if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
- Fingerprinting required for certain roles and states (e.g., WV)
- Education verification required for highest level of education
- OFAC Sanctions List Search required for all new/pre candidates
- Compliance with Prisma Health’s policies and documentation requirements
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet job demands
- Respirator Fit Test completed onsite during orientation (N95 masks commonly used)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required for high-risk areas, current within 10 years
- Negative TB test (True 2-step PPD, QF Gold, or Tspot) within 90 days of start
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination)
- Varicella
- Drug screening within 1 year of start, updated annually (5-panel minimum)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required by deadlines (not required for 100% remote workers)
- COVID-19 vaccine no longer required
Orientation & Testing
- Online orientation modules must be completed within 72 hours of assignment
- Pre-assignment testing (medication and EKG) must be completed within 72 hours of receiving login info
- Candidates have two attempts to pass required tests; failure results in cancellation
- EKG practice test and study guide provided (except for Behavioral Health, LTC, MS, OR, Transitional Care)
Additional Notes
- Badge photo required with specific guidelines (passport style, plain background, no hats or sunglasses)
- Must comply with Prisma Health’s floating policy and other facility-specific policies
- Documentation must be verifiable and meet Prisma Health standards for acceptance
This position requires a highly qualified Registered Nurse with strong cardiac experience, capable of working in a specialized orthopedic spine telemetry unit with flexibility to float to other units as needed. Compliance with extensive certification, background, health, and testing requirements is mandatory.
