Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Wilmington, North Carolina
Position Overview
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Location: Wilmington, NC
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour nights
- Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week (no OT billed until after 48 hours if working 48)
- Patient Ratio: 1:6 (floor for surgical/medicine inpatient patients)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Float Requirement: May float to like units as needed
- Unit Type: Combination acuity unit (Adult medical surgical and surgical stepdown)
- Patient Diagnoses: Wide range including cellulitis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, trauma (MVA, gunshots, stabbings, falls), cancers, kidney stones, bowel obstruction, peripheral vascular disease, limb ischemia, hernia, gangrene
- Special Procedures: Inpatient surgical procedures and trauma care such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, TURP, ostomy creation/closure, wound debridement, tumor removal, kidney stone removal, amputations, fem-pop bypass
- Special Equipment: Wound Vacs, Chest Tubes, NG tube/Corpak, JP Drains, Hemovac Drains, Penrose Drains
- Unit Systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
- Orientation: 2 days hospital orientation + 24 hours floor training
- Dress Code: All Navy scrubs or Navy bottoms with White top
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2 years surgical unit experience
- Preferred travel experience but not required
- Required clinical skills:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Blood product administration
- Central and peripheral line care/management
- Surgical drains
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care and wound vac management
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Certification
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
- Preferred skills: Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
Additional Job Details
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team during catastrophic events or disasters
- May be reassigned to different units as needed during contract
- RTO max 7 days for auto offer
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including criminal, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG within 90 days of start
- Education verification for highest degree earned specific to profession
- State-specific searches for North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance within 90 days of start
- Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
- Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start; onsite fit testing available if needed
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if negative)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or facility-specific declination if negative/equivocal)
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physical with TB questionnaire signed by physician
- Competency exams as applicable including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must score 82% or higher, 3 attempts allowed)
- Color blind testing within 1 year via Relias (score ≥80%)
Facility Specific Requirements
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules prior to start (up to 8 hours)
- Must complete Medication Safety training and submit certificate
- Must sign confidentiality agreement, hospital policies, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and other facility-specific documents prior to start
- Photo for badge required (passport style, white background, business attire)
- Must complete online NEO education modules if assigned to Orthopedic Hospital
- May be required to complete Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training if assigned to ER or Behavioral Health units (within first 30 days onsite)
- Radiation badge required for certain specialties (not applicable for this RN surgical unit role)

- Candidates must be prepared to work in a fast-paced surgical and trauma environment with a wide variety of patient diagnoses and procedures
- Strong clinical skills in dysrhythmia management and line care are essential
- Flexibility to float and participate in emergency response teams is required
- Compliance with all background checks, immunizations, and competency testing is mandatory for assignment start and continuation
