Description
Job Opportunity: Medical-Surgical Telemetry RN
Facility Overview
- Type: Critical Access Hospital
- Unit: Medical Surgical Telemetry (includes some Progressive Care)
- Unit Size: 25 beds within 17 rooms (4 private rooms including 1 End of Life and 3 isolation rooms)
- Patient Population: Medical-surgical telemetry patients, orthopedics, urology, ENT, gynecology, general surgery, and some progressive care patients
- Patient Age Range: Young adult to end of life
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Generally 1:4 or 1:5 depending on acuity
- Documentation System: EPIC
- Medication System: PYXIS
- Support Services: 24/7 hospitalist coverage dedicated to the unit, 24/7 lab and x-ray support, respiratory and anesthesia support available 24/7
- Special Equipment: Alaris IV pumps, Phillips cardiac monitors
- Respiratory Management: Respiratory therapists manage ventilators, nebulizers, and inhalers
Job Details
- Contract Length: 16 weeks (with possible extension up to 32 weeks)
- Schedule: 12-hour shifts (6:45 am - 7:15 pm), including every other weekend minimum; holiday shifts as needed
- Floating: Voluntary only, within scope of practice
- Charge Nurse: Not required
- Orientation: Bi-weekly orientations on Mondays
Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience in Medical-Surgical Telemetry required
- Progressive care experience preferred
- Prior travel nursing experience required
- EPIC experience within the past 2 years required (non-negotiable)
- Charge RN experience required
- Experience with insulin drips and cardiac drips required
- Certifications:
- AHA BLS
- AHA ACLS
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required prior to start
- Additional:
- Must be able to explain any employment gaps over 90 days
- Complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type required for submission
Unit Specifics
- The unit functions as Code 99, Rapid Response, Fall, and IV team for the hospital.
- Patients requiring ICU-level care are transferred within the network; supportive care protocols are in place during transfer.
- The unit supports a culture of teamwork and professional growth with approachable hospitalists and management.
- House supervisors provide oversight when managers are not present; one manager is always on call.
- Semi-private rooms support negative pressure isolation.
- Ancillary staff includes 2-3 LNA/CNA/PCT per shift and variable unit clerks/secretaries and volunteers.
Additional Notes
- No block scheduling allowed.
- IV shifts available to offer.
- Reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended due to lack of public transportation.
- Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires from November through April.
This position is ideal for experienced Medical-Surgical Telemetry RNs who are comfortable with progressive care patients, have recent EPIC experience, and are looking for a supportive, team-oriented environment in a critical access hospital setting.
