Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Clinical Specialist - Peri Op)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Role: Clinical Specialist covering peri-operative areas
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours weekly
  • Must hold a valid DC nursing license
  • Minimum 2 years of educator experience required
  • Certifications Required:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)
  • Preferred Certification: CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse)
  • EMR System: Cerner (required)
  • Weekend Requirement: Emergency coverage only
  • General Skills Required:
    • Inpatient Acute Care
    • Surgical Services
    • Ventilator management
    • Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
    • Scrub and wound vacs

Role Summary

The Clinical Specialist acts as a clinical expert, educator, collaborator, consultant, leader, and researcher for the peri-operative patient population. Responsibilities include addressing complex patient care issues and providing guidance on prevention and management of patient care practices.


Health & Safety Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required (seasonal vaccination/documentation mandatory)
  • May come into contact with COVID-19 patients
  • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
  • N95 Fit Test within 9 months of start, updated annually (client may complete on-site if needed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within the past year, updated annually
  • Documentation of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers required
  • Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination required
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer documentation required
  • Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), updated annually

Background & Compliance

  • Criminal background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • E-Verify, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG checks required prior to start and monthly thereafter
  • Education verification for highest degree required by position
  • Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
  • Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education, employment, license, and contact information
  • Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually

Competency & Certification Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 3 years, passing score 80%+
  • Color blindness testing (online or in-person) required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required annually for specific units (including ICU, Telemetry, ER, Cardiac, etc.) with strict passing criteria
  • Other certifications as required by unit description (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM)

Additional Notes

  • Valid driver's license required if driving is an essential job function
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
  • Facility-specific modules (SITELS) must be completed prior to hire date
  • Photo for badge required with specific guidelines (clear, centered, no glare, solid background)

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity peri-operative environment with a focus on clinical expertise and education. Candidates must meet strict licensure, certification, and compliance requirements to ensure patient safety and quality care.
