Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Clinical Specialist (ED/Trauma)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Role: Clinical Specialist covering Emergency Department (ED) / Trauma
  • Shift: Monday to Friday, 40 hours weekly
  • Weekend Requirement: Emergency coverage only
  • Responsibilities:
    • Serve as a clinical expert, healthcare provider, educator, collaborator, consultant, leader, and researcher for ED/Trauma patient population
    • Provide consultation on complex patient care issues
    • Offer guidance on prevention and management of patient care practices

Requirements

Licensure & Experience

  • Must have a valid District of Columbia nursing license in hand
  • Minimum 2 years of educator experience
  • At least 2 years of recent work experience, including at least 1 travel assignment or 1 month of per diem assignment

Certifications

  • Required:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC certified
  • Preferred:
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) not required for ED
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit description (e.g., NRP, NIH Stroke Certification)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Experience in inpatient acute care and emergency department settings
  • Clinical practice knowledge specific to ED/Trauma specialty
  • Proficient in triage and ventilator management
  • EMR experience required: Cerner

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required (or approved medical/religious exemption) for the 2025-26 flu season
  • May come into contact with COVID-19 patients
  • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within the past year, with annual updates if applicable
  • Drug screening within 90 days of start, updated annually (does not include marijuana)
  • N95 fit test within 9 months of start, updated annually (client may complete on-site)
  • Documentation of immunity or vaccination for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or signed declination)
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years preferred

Background & Compliance

  • Criminal background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • Education verification of highest degree required by position
  • Employment application with 7 years of work history, no gaps
  • Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience in the last 3 years
  • Various monthly and pre-start federal and state background screenings (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Competency exams required within 3 years of start, including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (with remediation if needed)
  • Annual skills checklist and safety manual acknowledgment

Additional Notes

  • Valid driver’s license required if driving is an essential job function
  • Clear photo required for badge issuance
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules (SITELS) prior to start date
  • Facility requires strict adherence to all health and safety protocols
