Description

Travel RN Opportunity - Medical/Surgical Telemetry Unit

Location: Denver, Colorado
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • 18-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit
  • 32 staff members (day and night shifts)
  • Patient-to-RN ratio: 5:1
  • Equipment includes Philips monitors, Alaris pumps, dopplers, Welch-Allyn VS machines, Mobilab, glucometers
  • EMR system: Meditech

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in specialty
  • Proficient in Meditech EMR
  • Skilled in tracheostomy and ostomy care
  • ACLS, BLS, and NIH certifications required
  • Must be willing to work weekend shifts

Preferred:

  • Experience with general surgery patients

Typical Patient Population

  • Medical and surgical patients including:
    • Abdominal surgeries (colectomy, ostomy creation/takedown)
    • Minimally invasive surgeries (DaVinci Robot)
    • Gynecological surgeries (hysterectomies, vaginal/laparoscopic)
    • Medical diagnoses such as CHF, COPD, cellulitis, sepsis, DKA, pneumonia, diabetes, non-healing wounds
    • Neurosurgical and skull base/EENT patients

Typical Procedures and Care Provided

  • Management of artificial airways
  • Ostomy care and management
  • Foley catheter care and documentation
  • Central line care (daily CHG wipes, dressing changes, use of SwabCaps)
  • Restraint care (only staff with competency may care for patients in restraints)
  • Telemetry monitoring and ECG strip documentation
  • Pain management and reassessment after medication administration
  • Purposeful hourly rounding assessing Potty, Pain, Position, Personal Items, and Pumps (5 Ps)

  • Team-oriented, upbeat, and kind personality preferred
  • Ability to work in a busy environment and shift priorities easily
  • Enjoys precepting and coaching new nurses
  • High standards of behavior aligned with organizational values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence (iCARE)
  • Strong emphasis on patient communication using AIDET framework
  • No Pass Zone policy: all staff must respond to call lights and alarms
  • Bedside shift reports and structured interdisciplinary bedside rounding (SIBR)

Documentation and Communication

  • RN responsible for vital signs (except some collected by PCT) and all medication documentation
  • Intake and output documented every 12 hours in real time
  • Pain reassessment required after pain medication administration
  • Communication with charge nurse essential for changes in patient condition, physician calls, and discharge planning
  • Participation in shift huddles and timely attendance required

Additional Notes

  • Resource RN assigned each shift to support travelers
  • Agency and travel RNs may not discontinue central lines
  • Must review and sign unit policies and guidelines before starting shift

Certifications and Licenses Required

  • Registered Nurse License (valid in Colorado)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Certification
