Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (OR RN Core 3 & 4)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • License: Must have Indiana, compact, or temporary license at time of start
  • Return to Office Restrictions: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Specialty & Unit Information

  • Trauma Level I Experience: Required
    • If candidate has at least 1 year of Level I trauma experience, screen for > 2 years total experience
  • Role: Circulate required; Scrub preferred
  • Scope: OR RNs need to be well-rounded and current in most areas except Cardiovascular & Transplant (floating may occur in various specialties)
  • Units Covered: Core 3 & 4 including General Surgery, Plastic, Gynecology, ENT, Trauma, Neuro, Orthopedics, GU, Colorectal Robotics
  • Average Daily Census: 70-80 patients
  • Rooms: 21

  • Indiana RN Travel Restriction: Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at IU Health facilities except for Perioperative/OR RN travelers and certain allied/ambulatory RN roles (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS) who are exempt and allowed to work past this date.

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA or RQI acceptable) – Required for all candidates
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – May be required depending on cost center
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – May be required depending on cost center
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – May be required depending on cost center
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy Certification) – May be required depending on cost center
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – May be required depending on cost center
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – May be required depending on unit
  • NIH Stroke Certification – May be required depending on cost center
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam – Required
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara or equivalent) – Required with minimum 100% score
  • Unit Competency Exam – Required
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA – Required
  • State License Verification – Must be verified online within 30 days before start

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Completed within 12 months of start date
  • Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months of start; must be tested with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella – Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella – Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season; no declinations accepted
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Background Checks:
    • Must include 7 years of residence/work history
    • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
    • Education Verification (may be pending at start if needed)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start

Additional Requirements

  • References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years; must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
  • Employment Application: Must be current and explain any gaps of 30 days or more
  • Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start and annually thereafter
  • Facility Specific Documents: Various compliance, confidentiality, orientation, and policy forms must be completed prior to start
  • Mandatory RRT Modules: (Only for RRT candidates) 22 required modules must be completed before orientation

Work Schedule & Other Notes

  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract
  • Floating within scope is expected to meet facility needs
  • Pending license accepted if Indiana, compact, or temporary license is active at start
  • Locals accepted with specific rate adjustments (not relevant here)
  • On-call shifts required as noted

This position is ideal for experienced OR Registered Nurses with trauma Level I experience who are flexible and able to float across multiple surgical specialties in a high-volume acute care setting. First-time travelers are welcome to apply.
