Job Opportunity: Surgical Services - Travel/Contract

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Unit: Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), with possible float to Main OR
Experience Required: Minimum 1.5+ years

Job Description

  • Primary unit is CVOR; may float to Main OR if CVOR volume is low.
  • Must have scrub experience.
  • Proficiency required in heart and lung transplant cases; kidney transplant experience highly preferred.
  • Required case experience includes:
    • Valve replacement
    • Coronary artery bypass
    • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
    • Dissection
    • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
  • Must have experience with Hybrid Room, Endovascular, and vascular procedures such as:
    • Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
    • Carotid endarterectomy
    • Arteriogram, angiogram
    • Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR)
    • Arteriovenous (AV) fistula
    • Femoral-popliteal (Fem-Pop) bypass
  • On-call requirements:
    • 8-hour shifts on 2 weekdays (either 3-11 pm or 11-7 am)
    • 24-hour on-call on Saturdays and Sundays (one weekend per month)
  • Cases in Main OR may include:
    • General surgery
    • Laparoscopic surgery
    • Gynecological surgery
    • Robotic surgery
    • Orthopedic/neurosurgery
    • Vascular surgery
    • Pediatric surgery
  • Block or special scheduling requests require approval at booking.
  • Charting system used: Epic.
  • First-time travelers are accepted.
  • Scrub provided.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Required Credentials & Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all RNs and many allied health professionals.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for adult critical care units and some other areas; not required for CVOR RN.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required for NICU, L&D, Mother-Baby, Newborn, Nursery, Antepartum, and Special Care Nursery units; not required for CVOR RN.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for ED, Outpatient Surgery, PACU, PICU, and Pediatrics; not required for CVOR RN.
  • Chemotherapy Certification: Required if applicable (ONS/ONCC for adults, APHON for pediatrics).
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs.
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for adult critical care specialties and pediatric ER; not required for CVOR RN.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM): Required for Mother-Baby and Labor & Delivery RNs; not applicable for CVOR.
  • Tech Certifications: As applicable (e.g., ARRT, RCIS for Cardiac Cath Lab, NBSTSA or NCCT for CST).
  • Pass/Fail Testing: Pharmacology and EKG competency exams required for clinical staff in relevant units.
  • Competency Exams: Medication, Dysrhythmia/EKG, and other competency exams required within 12 months of start.
  • Color Blind Testing: Required within one year of start if job tasks require color discrimination.
  • State License Verification: Must match legal name with suffixes; name change documentation required if applicable.
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for RNs, LPNs, and APs.
  • Other Certifications: May be required depending on unit and role.

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Background Checks: Criminal background check required within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches.
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel urine drug screen required within 30 days of start.
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • TB test (blood or skin) within 3 months of start; additional clearance if history of positive TB.
    • Influenza vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity proof required.
    • Varicella immunity proof required.
    • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination compliance required.
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within past 10 years.
  • Physical Exam: Within 12 months of start, must clear candidate for essential job functions and communicable disease free.
  • Fit Testing: On-site fit test mandatory for respirator use; facial hair must be shaved unless accommodation approved.
  • Latex Allergy Screening: Required if job tasks involve glove use; accommodations handled case-by-case.
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start for respirator use.
  • Annual Education: Must complete annual education sign-off and facility-specific training.
  • References: Two references within last 2 years required, including at least one managerial reference.
  • Employment History: 7 years of work history required; New Jersey candidates require verification of at least 1 year prior to start.

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • On-call shifts as described above.
  • Floating between CVOR and Main OR.
  • No block or special scheduling unless pre-approved.
  • Scrub uniforms provided.
  • Charting in Epic system.

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers are welcome.
  • Must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements.
  • Must complete all required documentation and clearances prior to start.
  • RWJBarnabas Health is the employer system; documentation from one RWJ site may be accepted for others if gap is 30 days or less.

This position is ideal for surgical services professionals with strong cardiovascular OR experience, including transplant and endovascular procedures, who are flexible with on-call and floating assignments.
