Description

Registered Nurse - Neuro Unit

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks


Unit & Job Details

  • Unit: Neuro Unit
  • Patient Diagnoses: General medicine with a focus on neurology
  • Ratios: 1:6
  • Shift: Night shift; 36 or 48 hours accepted (no OT billed until after 48 hours if working 48)
  • Float Requirement: Yes, travelers float first
  • Weekend Requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend)
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Scheduling: Manager schedules
  • Scrubs: Not provided; navy blue required
  • Additional: Contract staff expected to participate in Storm/Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters. Possible unit reassignment mid-contract.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years (highest required)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; 1st time travelers accepted
  • Preferred: NIH Stroke certification, neuro experience, willingness to learn charge nurse role
  • Skills: Teamwork approach to patient care, focus on patient safety

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Preferred/Additional Certifications:

  • NIH Stroke Certification (annual completion if required)
  • Charge nurse experience preferred

Compliance & Testing Requirements

  • Background checks including criminal, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG within 90 days of start
  • Education verification for highest degree earned
  • Color Blind Test within 1 year prior to start
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must score 82% or higher; 3 attempts allowed with remediation process)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year prior to start; onsite fit testing available if needed
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel urine screen)
  • Immunizations/Titers required: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu seasonal vaccination or approved exemption (deadline 10/31)
  • Flu exemption requests reviewed case-by-case; approved exemptions require mask wearing on campus

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules prior to start (up to 8 hours)
  • Must complete Medication Safety training and submit certificate
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement, job description, hospital policies, and other facility-specific documents prior to start
  • Photo for badge required (passport style, white background, no headwear except glasses, business attire)
  • Must complete Corp ID process including logging into I-Learn within 24 hours of receiving credentials
  • May be required to complete additional modules if assigned to ER Holding or Emergency Observation units
  • Must comply with all facility policies including tobacco-free campus acknowledgment and dress code

Additional Notes

  • RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
  • Maximum 7 days RTO allowed for auto offers
  • Travelers must be prepared to work in a fast-paced neuro unit with a focus on patient safety and teamwork
  • Storm/Hurricane team participation and disaster response readiness required

This position is ideal for Registered Nurses with neuro experience or interest, who meet the certification and compliance requirements, and are ready for a travel contract in a specialized neuro unit with night shifts and weekend work.
