Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Details

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
  • Candidates with MedSurg RN experience plus ICU and PCU patient experience with an additional 2 years will also be considered.
  • Prior travel experience is NOT explicitly required.

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Travelers must work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned with training and resources provided.
  • Floating between Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU units may be required.
  • Teaching facility environment: travel nurses must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them.
  • Staffing ratios:
    • PCU: 1:4
    • MedSurg: 1:5-6 (sometimes mixed with PCU patients)
  • Unit is a 32-bed mixed model cardio-pulmonary unit with emphasis on pulmonary care.
  • Patient population includes cardiac medical, valve replacement, COPD, CHF, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant (pre/post), trach-to-vent patients, neurodegenerative diseases, trauma, flu, TB, and COVID-19.

Important Facility Policies

  • COVID-19 vaccine is required for all travelers (medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation).
  • Indiana RNs will not be allowed to work at the facility after 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).

Staffing & Scheduling Notes

  • Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Local candidates are NOT accepted.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year work/lived history
    • SSN Trace
    • County Criminal
    • Statewide
    • National Sex Offender
    • FACIS Level III
    • Education Verification
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Transcript or diploma (official copy required)
  • Education verification by 3rd party
  • State RN license verification (within 30 days of start)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Flu vaccination/documentation required for 2025-26 season; no declinations accepted (medical/religious exemptions allowed with approval)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam
  • Unit competency exam
  • Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment (charge, manager, supervisor, or above)
  • Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety forms (time sensitive)
  • Completion of mandatory RRT modules if applicable (for RRT candidates only)

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must agree to the possibility of precepting students.
  • Floating between units may be required.
  • Facility is a teaching hospital with a focus on cardio-pulmonary care.
  • Strict vaccination and health screening policies are enforced.
