Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (OR RN) - Charleston, South Carolina
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
- Location: Charleston, South Carolina
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (8:30 AM - 9:00 PM)
- On-Call: Yes, up to 4 call shifts every 4 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: Up to one working weekend shift every 4 weeks
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas Dec 24-26, New Year's Dec 31-Jan 1)
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units or sister facilities
Experience & Licensure Requirements
- Years of Experience: 2 years strongly preferred
- First-Timers: Accepted
- License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
- Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center experience required
- Preferred Experience: Scrub experience strongly preferred
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required (AHA or ARC accepted)
- Radiation Badge: Required (provided by agency)
- Additional Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit
- Other certifications such as TNCC, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, NIH Stroke, EFM may be required depending on unit assignment (check specific unit requirements)
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% Registered Nurses, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Nurses trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
- Charting system: EPIC
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
- Parking available with a permit and fee (details not included here)
- During hurricane season (June-November), employees may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Proof of work eligibility (I-9, E-Verify)
- Copy of Driver’s License/State ID
- Social Security Card or SSN verification
- Background checks including:
- 7-year history with multiple searches (SSN trace, state and national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification (diploma/transcripts preferred as placeholder if needed)
- NURSYS verification for RN licenses
- Radiation badge process required before starting
- Clinical references (2 required)
- Employment application with full work history and no unaccounted gaps
- Skills checklist updated annually
Health & Safety Requirements
- Initial physical exam and annual updates attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required or proof of vaccination/declination for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Annual TB questionnaire
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- COVID-19 vaccines highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
- Seasonal flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), with no declinations accepted; documentation must be uploaded by deadline
- For Sterile Processing Techs only: CMP and CBC labs plus specific physical assessment form required
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Completion of orientation modules (OurDay platform) required before start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
- Clear, passport-style photo required for badge prior to start
- Radiation badge must be received before starting patient care duties; orientation may proceed without badge but no floor access until received
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic OR team. Candidates should be prepared for a demanding schedule including call, weekends, holidays, and potential emergency response during hurricane season. Compliance with extensive credentialing, health, and safety requirements is mandatory.
