Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Winston Salem, North Carolina
Job Overview
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit Type: ICU Stepdown / PCU / DO/IMC / Telemetry
- Shift: 12-hour nights
- Patient Ratio: 3:1 or 4:1
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Float Requirement: Floating to sister ICCU unit as needed
- Scheduling: No block scheduling allowed; schedule created by Nurse Manager
- Orientation: Hospital orientation required during week one; attendance mandatory for all classes
- EKG Testing: Must pass EKG testing prior to start
Required Experience & Skills
Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
Traveler Experience: Accepts first-time travelers (prior travel experience NOT required)
Clinical Skills Required:
- Experience with arterial lines and titrating vasoactive drips
- PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown nursing
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- IV insulin protocols
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
- Heparin protocols
- Care for patients with CVA, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula
- Non-invasive airway management and tracheostomy management
- Isolation precautions
- IV starts and conscious sedation experience
Drip Experience: Strong drip experience required; only one pressor drip per patient allowed on unit (more than one requires transfer to ICU)
Common Drips Used: Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Neo drips
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Average Daily Census: 18 patients, 20 beds
- Patient Types: ICU stepdown, post rapid response, respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, post-op (GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomies, neuro, ortho surgeries), pre/post OB with complications (Pitocin)
- Patient Age Range: Adolescent, adult, geriatric
Equipment & Systems
- Bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup
- Use of Pyxis medication system and Epic electronic health record
- No ventilators on unit
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Additional certifications as applicable:
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) if applicable
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam with a score of 82% or higher within 72 hours of assignment start
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Criminal background checks within 90 days for all locations lived in last 7 years
- Education verification for highest degree earned (RNs may start with pending verification if license is valid)
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
- Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) required
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
- Required immunizations or titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
- State-specific registry and exclusion list checks within 90 days prior to start (North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance)
Additional Notes
- No call-offs or additional RTO (Return to Office) allowed after booking; excessive RTO may lead to cancellation
- Scrubs: Navy, white, or combination
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules prior to start (approx. 8 hours)
- Must complete medication safety training and submit certificate of completion
- Must complete hospital policies and confidentiality agreements
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel acute care RNs
- Performance evaluations required if worked with Aya Healthcare over 1 year
This position is ideal for RNs with strong ICU stepdown and telemetry experience who are comfortable managing complex patients requiring vasoactive drips and advanced monitoring. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
