Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Job Details

  • Position/Specialty: Ambulatory OR CST
  • Shift Options:
    • 3x12 hour shifts (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
    • 4x10 hour shifts (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM)
    • One late week per 4 weeks to complete cases
  • Weekend Requirement: No weekends required
  • On-call Requirement: No
  • Floating: Possible floating within Perioperative facility within scope
  • Block Schedule: May be accommodated at manager's discretion
  • Number of ORs: 9
  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years
  • Experience Preferred: Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, GYN, GU, Endocrine, Surgical Oncology
  • First-timers: Not accepted
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, within 50 miles radius
  • Guaranteed Hours: Traveler may be called off up to 10 hours per 2-week period
  • Precepting: May be required to precept a care team member in the OR
  • Hurricane Season: Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during June-November (peak in August-September). Confirm availability before accepting assignments during this period.

Certifications Required

  • NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • Radiation Badge: Required and must be provided by parent company (required for CST and other specified roles)
  • Additional Preferred Certifications (depending on unit):
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, required for some units
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - as required
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as required
    • Other certifications as applicable based on unit assignment

Licensure

  • State License: South Carolina RN license or compact license required
  • Primary Source Verification: Required and must be active, unencumbered, with no pending actions
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs & LPNs/LVNs
  • Walk-Through/Temporary Licensure: Available for SC RN license with specific conditions

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Surgical Services specialty
  • Prior travel experience not explicitly required
  • Must have proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Skills checklist must be updated annually

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
    • COVID Vaccines: Not required but highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests accepted
  • Respiratory Safety Clearance: Fit testing required; PAPR not provided by facility

Background & Compliance

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Required searches include SSN trace, state and national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification pending
  • State-specific Medicaid excluded provider search required
  • Radiation badge process mandatory for CST and other specified roles; candidates cannot start without badge

Competency Exams & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color Blind Testing required prior to start
  • Competency exam required; pediatric OR competency preferred if applicable but regular OR competency accepted

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) prior to start; must be done on a computer, not a phone
  • First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay modules must be completed before orientation; failure to complete results in being sent home
  • Passport-style badge photo required before start (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into OurDay platform
  • Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical assessment and lab requirements (not applicable for CST)
