Description
Registered Nurse (Ortho) - Travel/Contract
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with orthopedic experience for a fast-paced unit specializing in orthopedic and neuro spine patients, as well as med-surg and post-surgical care. The unit requires nurses who can manage pain effectively and handle a variety of patient diagnoses, including COVID-positive patients outside of ICU.

Experience
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience with required orthopedic experience
- Prior travel experience not required; first-time travelers accepted if they have EPIC experience
Skills & Certifications

- IV Start
- Telemetry
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Preferred:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- Charge Nurse Experience
- Level I Trauma Experience
Additional Requirements
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
- Float requirement: Must be willing to float to other med-surg units as needed
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend required; missed weekends must be made up
- No holiday RTO (Request Time Off) approved
- Maximum 7 days RTO allowed for auto-offer
Work Details
- Shift: 12-hour day shifts
- Hours: Options for 36 or 48 hours per week (no overtime until after 48 hours)
- Patient Ratio: Typically 5-6:1, can flex to 7:1 in extreme cases
- Patient Population: Orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, post-surgical
- Average Daily Census: 37 patients
- Beds: 39
Scheduling
- Block scheduling options available (e.g., Friday/Saturday/Sunday or Saturday/Sunday/Monday)
Patient Care Environment
- Fast-paced unit with orthopedic and spine patients
- Pain management is a critical component of care
- COVID patients are cared for on all units unless in ICU
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks within 6 months required
- Drug testing (9-panel) within 6 months required
- Various health documents including:
- Negative TB or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (must score 82% or higher)
- Photo ID for badge creation required prior to start
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and safety training modules
- Education verification and licensure verification required
- Must complete medication safety training and confidentiality agreements
Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
- Must comply with all hospital policies and complete required documentation timely to avoid start delays
- Float to other med-surg units as needed based on census
