Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Teaching facility environment; travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- Locals are not accepted.
- Must have Indiana or Compact RN license in hand or have submitted fingerprint application for license.
- First-time travelers accepted.
- Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be expected.
- Staffing ratios: 1:5-6.
- Unit patient types include: GSW, blunt trauma, stab wounds, MVC, falls, orthopedic injuries, ostomies, hernia repairs, skin flaps, significant wounds, surgical drains.
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/24, except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
- Level 1 Trauma experience preferred.
- Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required. First-time travelers accepted.
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required for all candidates).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA NRP only.
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy) - as applicable.
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable.
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - as applicable per unit.
- NIH Stroke Certification - as applicable.
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA.
- State License Verification within 30 days of start.
Required Competencies and Exams
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (not required for Techs or RRTs).
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, minimum 100% score).
- Unit Competency Exam.
Health and Background Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
- Background Check within 90 days of start, including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III, education verification.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit Mask test within 12 months of start (specific approved respirators required).
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required).
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Flu Seasonal Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season; no declinations accepted.
- TB Questionnaire updated annually.
- Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent).
Additional Requirements
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles.
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Skills Checklist completed within 12 months and updated annually.
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, confidentiality, and policy forms (time sensitive).
- Completion of mandatory RRT modules if applicable (22 modules with strict deadlines).
Notes
- Travelers must be prepared to float to different units as needed.
- Charge nurse duties may be assigned based on operational needs with training provided.
- IU Health is a teaching facility; willingness to precept or have students shadow is required.
- Locals are not accepted for this travel position.
- Indiana RNs will not be allowed to work at IU Health facilities after 11/30/24 except for certain specialties (Periop/OR, Allied, Ambulatory).
