Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
  • Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
  • First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.

Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience required in specialty.
  • Skillset requirements: Telemetry, proficient neuro experience, management of drips.
  • Preferred skills: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience.
  • Floating: May be required to float to Med-Surg, PCU, ICU units with resources provided.
  • Staffing ratios: 1:3-4 (rarely 1:5 during emergencies).

Unit Information

  • Patient types: CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors and resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs, falls), GI surgeries, large wound cleaning and closures.

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
  • BLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM)

Licensure & Background

  • Valid RN license with online verification within 30 days of start.
  • Background checks required within 30-90 days of start, including:
    • 7-year work/lived history
    • SSN trace
    • County, state, national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS Level III
    • Education verification
    • International search if applicable

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required).
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or proof of immunity:
    • TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required (no declinations accepted)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.

Additional Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years, with supervisory titles.
  • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days.
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually.
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology test required.
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety modules prior to start.

Important Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
  • Travelers must be willing to float and accept weekend shifts as required.
  • On-site PAPR is automatically approved at Methodist and University hospitals.
