Description
Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Unit: Acute Leukemia and Hematology (12-hour Day/Night shifts only)
- Focus: Care primarily for newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients
- Patient Age Group: Adults and Geriatrics
- Staffing Ratios: Goal 1:4, can be 1:5
- Schedule: Self-scheduling accepted; no set/blocked scheduling
- Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
- Prior travel experience: Not allowed (First time travelers: NO)
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- ONS Chemo Certification
Preferred:
- NIH Stroke Certification (check unit requirements)
Skills & Competencies Required
- Medical-Surgical/Telemetry experience
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Computerized charting experience with EPIC
Special Focus Areas
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols
- Patient falls prevention
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start (including FBI/BCI fingerprinting)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program
- State license verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification for RNs
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption allowed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Competency Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if failed)
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required (at least one from a manager/director or formal leadership role)
- Employment application and skills checklist required
- Annual acknowledgment of orientation safety manual, ethics, compliance, and dress code/hand hygiene policies
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
This position is ideal for experienced oncology nurses with chemo certification who are comfortable working in a fast-paced hematology/oncology unit with adult and geriatric patients. Prior travel experience is required, and candidates must meet strict compliance and credentialing standards.
