Job Opportunity: Respiratory Therapist (Contract)

Job Summary

  • Provide and coordinate comprehensive respiratory care.
  • Administer respiratory care procedures and modalities following established standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Use evidence-based practices, clinical decision making, and skilled communication to ensure patient safety and optimal patient experience.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assess patients using pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiographs, hemodynamic and laboratory values, and correlate blood gases and electrolytes.
  • Operate specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings.
  • Assist physicians with bedside or other procedures as needed.
  • Provide medication treatments and therapies per physician orders or patient-driven respiratory protocols.
  • Clean, maintain, troubleshoot, and ensure proper functionality of respiratory equipment.
  • Educate patients on therapy purpose, techniques, self-care, and disease management.
  • Collaborate with other departments to facilitate clinical problem solving and patient management education.
  • Adapt to various service areas under physician direction and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, including patient handoffs and conflict resolution.
  • Promote a culture of safety by recognizing and applying safety measures, reporting safety events, and assisting with corrective actions.
  • Teach, educate, and precept new teammates, orientees, and students.
  • Provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles across the lifespan.

Licensure, Registration, and Certification Required

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the practicing state.
  • Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential if obtained prior to January 1, 2023.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Education Required

  • Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program with a minimum of an associate degree.

Experience Required

  • No prior experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding patient care and equipment use.
  • Proficient computer skills, including email and electronic medical record systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop rapport and maintain professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians.
  • Initiative and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize in a frequently interrupted environment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Operate all necessary equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs from knee to waist and occasionally from floor to waist.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs at waist height and carry across distances.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs from waist to overhead.
  • Ability to push/pull with 30 lbs of force occasionally over long distances.
  • Perform stand-pivot transfers from bed to chair.
  • Perform sliding transfers of 150 lbs person on a sheet across 2 feet with assistance.
  • Utilize safe body mechanics at all times.
