Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - IMC / IICU (Intermediate Intensive Care)

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for the Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU) with experience in critical care settings. The unit cares for adult patients including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases requiring frequent monitoring and interventions.


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of RN experience within the specialty for first-time travelers (critical care experience required).
  • Must have completed at least 1 prior travel assignment.
  • Previous IICU/ICU experience with patient acuity ratio of at least 1:3 required.
  • Ventilator experience required.
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation, and telemetry monitoring.
  • Medication management skills including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Prior travel experience is required (must have completed at least 1 prior travel contract).

Work Schedule

  • Weekend Requirement: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period.
  • Floating: Agency staff may be required to float to other units or campuses as needed, limited to qualified areas with documented competencies.
  • Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Must have an active South Carolina or multistate nursing license.
  • Required Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification (as applicable)
  • Charting: Minimum 1 year of EPIC experience required.

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Adult patients including trauma, medical, surgical, and neurology cases.
  • Patients require monitoring or interventions every 1–2 hours.
  • Unit receives direct admissions, ICU transfers, and escalations from Rapid Response Teams.
  • Special equipment includes Hercules patient re-positioners, ceiling lifts, and Airtaps.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: 1:3

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in cardiac monitoring and emergency response.
  • Experience in ICU or IICU required; progressive care settings such as PCU, DOU, IMC, or Stepdown will be considered.
  • Medication management including titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Ventilator management experience required.

Additional Requirements

  • Must comply with facility floating policy (signed annually).
  • Must complete online orientation modules within 72 hours of assignment.
  • Must pass pre-assignment testing including medication and arrhythmia competency exams (two attempts allowed).
  • Required background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and fingerprinting as applicable.
  • Required health documents including physical exam, immunizations (TB, Hepatitis B, Flu, MMR, Varicella), drug screening, and respirator fit testing.
  • Must complete annual competencies and core training (Parts I, II, III).
  • Must complete medication test/pharmacology competency exam annually.
