Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position in the ED Holding Support unit located in the Float Pool.
  • Patients are adults with any medical/surgical diagnosis, including PCU level patients.
  • Responsibilities include caring for MS/Tele cases and floating to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.
  • Night shift only, 36 hours per week.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Target patient ratios: 1:7 for MS/Tele or 1:4 for PCU level patients.
  • Maximum of 7 days RTO allowed after booking (no working out RTO onsite).
  • Contract staff may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters (Storm/Hurricane Team).

Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele)
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start (minimum score 82%, up to 3 attempts allowed).

Required Skills

  • MS/Telemetry nursing skills including:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (on unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Clinical skills including:
    • Colostomy care
    • Feeding tube care and management
    • Renal failure management
    • Blood product administration
    • Peripheral line and PICC line care/management
    • Phlebotomy
    • Heparin and insulin administration
    • Isolation precautions
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • CPAP/BiPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Interpretation of ABGs
    • Non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, face masks, portable oxygen tanks)
    • Tracheostomy management

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
  • Accessing ports and central line blood draws
  • Starting IVs
  • Care of CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury
  • Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
  • Wound care and wound vac management

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 12 hours
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules (approx. 8 hours) prior to start
  • Must complete medication safety training and other facility-specific modules before starting
  • Navy scrubs required

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Adult medical/surgical patients in ED Holding area awaiting inpatient beds
  • Mixed acuity with potential PCU level patients
  • Unit uses standard cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and other monitoring systems
  • Documentation and communication systems: Pyxis, Epic, SBAR

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background checks within 90 days for all locations lived in last 7 years
  • Education verification for highest degree earned (pending verification allowed if license is valid)
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination form
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption (required during flu season)
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; chest x-ray if positive
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years (travel/per diem acute care)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared for a high turnover, fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to float between multiple units as needed.
  • Candidates will be interviewed due to the mixed unit and acuity level.
  • Must comply with all facility-specific policies, confidentiality agreements, and training requirements.
  • May be required to participate in disaster response teams during contract.
