Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Neuro Unit)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks


Unit & Specialty Details

  • Unit: Neuro Unit (focus on neurological patient care)
  • Patient Diagnoses: General medicine with a focus on neuro
  • Shift: Nights
  • Ratios: 1:6
  • Hours: 36 or 48 hours accepted
  • Float Requirement: Yes, travelers float first
  • Weekend Requirement: 5-6 weekend shifts (approximately every other weekend)
  • Storm/Hurricane Team: Contract staff will be assigned to Storm and/or Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters.

Experience & Skills Requirements

  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years in specialty required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; 1st time travelers accepted
  • Preferred Experience: NIH Stroke certification, neuro experience preferred, experience or willingness to learn charge nurse role preferred
  • Skills: Teamwork approach to patient care, focus on patient safety

Certifications Required

  • Mandatory: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Preferred: NIH Stroke Certification (annual completion if required)
  • Other certifications may be relevant depending on unit needs (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC) but are not explicitly required for this role.

Orientation & Training

  • Unit Orientation: 24 hours
  • Scheduling: Manager schedules
  • Scrubs: Navy Blue (not provided)
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start

Compliance & Background Checks

  • Criminal background checks required within 90 days of start, including local, federal, national, sex offender, and education verification (highest degree specific to profession).
  • Drug testing required within 30 days of start (10-panel negative screen).
  • Fit mask testing required within 1 year of start (N95 or PAPR training acceptable).
  • Physical exam required within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (9/1 to 10/31).
  • State-specific registry and exclusion list checks required within 90 days of start.

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, hospital policies, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and non-Novant health worker orientation (travel only).
  • Candidates must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation prior to start.
  • Candidates will be assigned a corporate ID and must complete I-Learn account setup and training modules prior to start.
  • Medication safety training and competency exams as required by the facility.
  • Must be prepared to work in a fast-paced acute care neuro unit with a focus on patient safety and teamwork.
