Job Opportunity: RRT-NICU (Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics)

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience. This role requires working across multiple pediatric units including NICU, PICU, Pediatric Floor, and Pediatric Emergency Department.


Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 5 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not accepting first-time travelers unless possessing a very high-level accurate skillset (implying prior travel experience strongly preferred)
  • Unit Experience: NICU and PICU experience is required (50-60% of daily cases)
  • Work Settings: Emergency Department, NICU, Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatrics
  • Airway Management & Suctioning: Endotracheal tube/suctioning, Extubation, Intubation Assist, Nasal airway suctioning, Oropharyngeal suctioning, Pulmonary hygiene, Sputum specimen collection, Tracheostomy suctioning
  • Patient Care: Aspiration, COVID, Cystic fibrosis, Fresh tracheostomy, Pneumonia
  • Medication Administration: Albuterol, Atrovent, Flovent, Nitric Oxide (INo), Pulmicort, Racemic epinephrine, Terbutaline Sulfate, Tobramycin, Xopenex
  • Medication Delivery Systems: Aerosol setup mask/trach, Medihaler, Metered dose inhaler
  • Nebulizer Skills: Hand Held, T-Piece, Trach Collar
  • Oxygen Therapy: Bag & Mask, ET Tube, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Portable Oxygen tank, T-piece, Trach Collar
  • Ventilator Management: BiPAP, CPAP, High frequency oscillator, IMV, SIMV, Troubleshooting high pressure alarms, Weaning from mechanical ventilation
  • Neonatal/Pediatric Equipment & Procedures: Bubble CPAP, Capillary blood gases, CPAP/Nasal CPAP/BiPAP, IMV/SIMV, Intubation Assist, Oscillating Ventilator, Pressure/Volume Ventilator, Umbilical blood gases
  • Professional Knowledge: ABG interpretation, Chest physiotherapy (Vest & manual)
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist)
    • NC State License

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • Direct intubation, nasal and oral airway placement
  • Care of patients undergoing bronchoscopy
  • Patient transport (inter-departmental and ambulance)
  • Neonatal/pediatric high-risk delivery assistance and transports
  • Care of infants/children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, near drowning, respiratory distress syndrome, RSV, transient tachypnea of the newborn
  • Basic EKG and arterial blood gas drawing

Shift & Scheduling

  • Shift Options: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts accepted
  • Night Shift: 18:45 - 07:15
  • Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend
  • Call Requirement: May be required depending on workload
  • Float Requirement: Yes, across pediatric units and floors
  • No block scheduling allowed
  • Unit Orientation: 36 hours

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patient Diagnoses: Pediatric and Neonates
  • Unit Ratios:
    • NICU: 70+ beds
    • PICU: 10 beds
    • Pediatric Floor: 32 beds
    • Pediatric ED: 14 beds
  • Must be competent in working in PICU, Pediatric ER, Pediatric Floor, and Pediatric Medical-Surgical units

Equipment & Systems

  • Must be competent with:
    • Servo-I, Servo-N ventilators
    • HOFV-3100 A & B
    • Alaris IV pumps (for continuous Albuterol treatments)
    • Airvo heated HFNC
    • BCPAP with multiple interfaces
    • Aerogen, Hope neb, EZflow Max neb
    • Hamilton T1 ventilator
    • Synclara, Volera, Beyond Air nitric system
    • Fisher Paykel Flexitrunk BCPAP interface
    • Metaneb, Smart Vest, Heliox use, AMBU bronchs
  • Unit Systems: Pyxis, EPIC (experience required)

Compliance & Requirements

  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and state-specific registry searches required within 90 days of start
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or PAPR training required
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccination or approved exemption (seasonal)
  • Certifications must be current and verifiable (BLS, NRP, PALS, RRT, NC State License)
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and training modules including medication safety, confidentiality, and hospital policies
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions

  • No Return to Origin (RTO) after booking allowed
  • No block scheduling permitted
  • Interview with manager required prior to offer
  • Scrubs: Black (not provided)

This position is ideal for experienced respiratory therapists with strong NICU/PICU skills and prior travel experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced pediatric critical care environment.
