Job Opportunity: Pre Op Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Specialty: Registered Nurse (Preoperative/Endoscopy)

Job Description

  • Work hours: 4x10 or 3x12 shifts (5:00 AM - 5:30 PM or 5:00 AM - 3:30 PM)
  • Weekend and holiday requirement: Every other weekend and alternate holidays
  • Patient ratio: 1:3
  • EMR system: Cerner
  • Work setting: Inpatient, Ambulatory/Outpatient, Level II Trauma, Phase II Recovery
  • Unit: Preoperative Unit within a Level I Trauma Center (18-bay area)
  • Patient population: Diverse surgical specialties including cardiac, plastics, breast, ENT, vascular, minimally invasive, general surgery, bariatric, colorectal, endocrine, orthopedics, neurosurgery, oncology, gynecological surgery, and urology
  • Responsibilities:
    • Comprehensive preoperative assessments
    • Initiating IV access
    • Patient education
    • Coordination with anesthesia and surgical teams
    • Assisting with regional anesthesia procedures (e.g., nerve blocks)
    • Supporting moderate sedation during preoperative interventions
  • Scrub color: Ceil Blue

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
  • Travel Experience: First-time travelers accepted (no prior travel experience required)
  • Licensure:
    • Pending DC nursing license accepted at time of submission
    • Must have DC license in hand prior to start date
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Skills:
    • Moderate sedation proficiency
    • Must pass Relias EKG Rhythm Interpretation Exam with:
      • Minimum overall score of 80%
      • 100% score on lethal rhythms section
  • Other:
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity Level I trauma environment
    • Adaptability to manage complex and diverse patient populations

Compliance and Documentation

  • Criminal background check within 90 days, including multi-state searches
  • E-Verify and I9 documentation required
  • Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana)
  • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (within 10 years preferred)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (within 1 year, updated annually)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) documentation or titers
    • Hepatitis B titer or series or signed declination
    • Varicella documentation or titer
  • N95 Fit Test within 9 months and updated annually (client may complete onsite)
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
  • Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education and license information
  • Skills checklist and competency exams required prior to start and updated annually

Additional Notes

  • Moderate sedation and regional anesthesia support skills are essential
  • The unit supports both elective and urgent surgical cases
  • The role requires strong coordination with multidisciplinary teams including anesthesia and surgery
  • Candidates must be prepared for weekend and holiday shifts on a rotating basis
