Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
Seeking Med/Surg skilled RNs for a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit. The primary patient population includes medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
Patient Diagnoses Include:
- Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
- Sepsis and Septic Shock
- Cancer and Malignant Neoplasms
- Acute Renal Failure (ARF)
- Encephalopathy
- Failure to Thrive (FTT)
- Diabetic Foot Ulcers
- Overdose (OD)
- Heparin drips
Responsibilities & Unit Details:
- Administer chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection)
- Manage colostomy care, accessing ports, blood product administration
- Central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management
- Manage surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Provide nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Follow isolation precautions and wound care including Wound Vac
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
- Night shifts
- Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient holding locations (e.g., ED inpatient holding)
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
- Every other weekend required
- Expected to participate in Storm Team/Hurricane Team during catastrophic events or disasters
- Attendance to monthly staff meetings required
- Daily census approximately 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census
Required Skills & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty (Medical-Surgical/Oncology)
- Experience in an inpatient setting required
- Oncology Certification (ONC) mandatory; must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Skills in:
- Med/Surg nursing
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central and peripheral line care
- PICC line management
- Heparin and insulin administration
- Surgical drains and chest tubes management
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care including Wound Vac
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
- Charge nurse experience
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required)
Orientation & Uniform
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white
Testing & Competency Requirements
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams required
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required
- Monthly and annual compliance and competency training as per facility standards
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
- Required immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Drug screening within 6 months of start
- Physical exam and other health documents as per travel agency standards
- Background checks and education verifications required
Additional Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
- Must be able to work night shifts and float as needed
- Contract staff may be reassigned during catastrophic events or disasters
- Must comply with all hospital policies, confidentiality agreements, and mandatory education modules
- Participation in storm/hurricane response teams expected
