Job Opportunity: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: Hermiston, Oregon
Employment Type: Contract

Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing in areas including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, blood bank, parasitology, urinalysis, and referred procedures. The MLS will maintain logs, binders, and records according to governing agency standards. Responsibilities include confirming, verifying, correlating, and interpreting test results using in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, instruments, and physiology.

The MLS will provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff, and other employees as needed. They have the authority to order rechecks of questionable results and to judge specimen adequacy, requesting new specimens if necessary. Additional duties may include special projects, policy review and creation, section head responsibilities, and participation in hospital committees or task forces.


Essential Job Functions

  • Perform technical, clerical, and interpersonal aspects of clinical lab services.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs maximum; frequently lift/carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Process laboratory tests and understand reference range differences for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric specimens.
  • Identify, match, and distinguish colors.
  • Support hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in required education for DNV programs as applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory science program.
  • Certification as MLS (ASCP), AMT, AAB, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year clinical/hospital laboratory experience.
