Job Description
- Work every other weekend per contract; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- May be required to cover unit charge nurse responsibilities with training and resources provided.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required with resources provided.
- Staffing ratios: PCU assignments 1:4; MedSurg assignments 1:5-6; sometimes mixed assignments of 4-5 patients.
- Unit is a 32-bed mixed model cardio-pulmonary unit with emphasis on pulmonary care.
- Patient population includes cardiac medical, valve replacement, COPD, CHF, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant (pre/post), trach-to-vent patients, neurodegenerative diseases, trauma, flu, TB, and COVID-19.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience; MedSurg RNs with ICU and PCU experience plus an additional 2 years considered (total 4 years).
- Certifications: ACLS and BLS (AHA or RQI accepted).
- License: Valid Indiana RN license (online verification required within 30 days before start).
- COVID-19 Vaccine: Required for all travelers; medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation.
- Additional Certifications: PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke, and others may be required depending on unit assignment.
- Competencies: Medication/Pharmacology exam, unit competency exam, color blindness testing.
- Background Checks: Must include 7 years of residence/work history, criminal, sex offender, and other standard checks.
- Health Requirements: Physical exam within 12 months, fit mask test within 12 months, negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, drug screening within 12 months, and immunizations including MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, flu vaccination (declinations not accepted except for approved exemptions).
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with supervisory titles.
- Application: Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days; 7-year work history verification.
Additional Information
- Local candidates are not accepted.
- Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- On-site PAPR is automatically approved at Methodist and University campuses.
- Must complete mandatory IU Health modules prior to orientation.
- Must complete facility-specific compliance and confidentiality forms prior to start.
- Flu vaccination is mandatory for the flu season (9/30 - 3/31) with no declinations accepted except approved medical or religious exemptions.
This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs comfortable working in a high-acuity cardio-pulmonary progressive care unit with teaching responsibilities and flexible floating assignments.
