Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Jefferson, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for the Operating Room with experience in general OR settings and a variety of surgical procedures. This is a travel contract position with a set schedule and no weekend or float requirements.


Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years (highest required)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Skills & Experience

  • Experience in General OR settings including:

    • Colonoscopy, EGD
    • Laparoscopic-assisted cases
    • Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection
    • Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical)
    • Abdominal/Vaginal hysterectomy, Bilateral tubal ligation
    • C-sections, Dilation & Curettage
    • Cataract extraction/implant, Vitrectomy
    • Orthopedic procedures: ACL reconstruction, Arthroscopy, Arthrotomy, Carpal tunnel release
    • Fracture reductions (closed and open)
    • Total joint replacement
    • Cystoscopy, Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords
    • Administration of blood products, Cardiac monitoring, Conscious sedation monitoring
    • Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling
    • Starting peripheral IVs, Universal protocol (time out) procedure
    • Urinary bladder catheterization, PACU (recovery)
  • Preferred experience in:

    • Ambulatory OR setting
    • Bronchoscopy, PEG tube placement/exchange
    • Scrub roles in Endoscopic, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic, Urology surgeries
    • Mastectomy, Thyroidectomy (partial/total), Circumcision
    • Transurethral resection of the prostate, Amputations
    • Emergency management including fire safety, latex allergy, malignant hyperthermia, laser safety, wound management

Work Details

  • Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Ratios: 1:1
  • Call Requirement: As needed with a 30-minute callback
  • Float Requirement: None
  • Weekend Requirement: None
  • Unit Orientation: 24 hours
  • Scrubs: Provided
  • Scheduling Type: Set schedule

Unit Systems

Required Background & Health Checks

  • Criminal background checks within 90 days for all locations lived in the last 7 years
  • Education verification for highest degree earned (RNs may start pending verification if license is valid)
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel negative screen required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing required (N95 mask within 1 year or PAPR training; PAPR not accepted at this facility)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (no timeframe)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (with follow-up if positive)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if needed (declinations not accepted)
    • Hepatitis B titer or series; if negative/equivocal, must sign facility-specific declination
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31)

Additional Requirements

  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years (for travel, allied, and per diem acute care)
  • Employment application must be uploaded
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blind testing within 1 year via Relias
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain RN specialties (including OR) with a minimum passing score of 82%
  • Completion of Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation for North Carolina travel candidates
  • Completion of facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, hospital policies, and others as required
  • Completion of annual compliance training and medication safety modules

  • Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
  • This is a travel contract with a duration of approximately 13 weeks.
  • Scrubs are provided.
  • The position requires a set schedule with no weekend or float requirements.
  • Call is required as needed with a 30-minute callback.
