Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele)

Location: Towson, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 13 weeks)
Shift: Nights, 3x12 hour shifts (19:00-07:30), every other weekend required, holidays as scheduled
Patient Population: Adult/Geriatric; Adolescents with Tanner score > 4 (prearranged admission)
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit during night shifts.
  • Unit includes patients recovering from complex surgeries such as total joint replacements, cervical and lumbar spine fusions, foot and ankle, head and neck, colorectal, hepatobiliary, urology, and gynecological surgeries.
  • Responsibilities include telemetry monitoring and rhythm basics, EKGs, IV therapy, PCA/PCEA management, capnography, and wound vac care.
  • Floating within the specialty and to lower acuity units as needed.
  • Pre-scheduled on-call shifts are not required.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience required.
  • Must have general surgery and orthopedic experience with strong clinical skills.
  • First-time travelers accepted if they have at least 1 year of healthcare professional experience with strong skills.
  • Prior travel experience is NOT required.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for Telemetry and stroke patient care)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) preferred but may be required as applicable.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work every other weekend and holidays as scheduled.
  • Must be capable of floating within the specialty and to lower acuity units.
  • Must be familiar with unit communication tools such as whiteboards, bedside shift reports, secure text messaging apps.

Patient Care & Unit Details

  • Patient care involves telemetry monitoring and managing complex post-surgical patients.
  • Equipment used includes IV pumps, PCA/PCEA pumps, capnography monitors, wound vacs.
  • Unit procedures include care for patients with complex orthopedic and surgical needs.
  • Telemetry monitoring skills and rhythm interpretation basics are essential.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, education verification, and state-specific exclusions.
  • Drug screening (negative 9 or 10 panel including fentanyl) within 30 days prior to start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (seasonal requirement)
    • Tdap (if working with children or specific units)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B titers or vaccination documentation
  • Mask fit testing (N95) within 1 year prior to start.
  • Two supervisory references within 1 year of start.
  • Employment history verification for 5-7 years.
  • Facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreements, badge photo, and job description acknowledgment.

Additional Notes

  • Floating and weekend/holiday work are mandatory.
  • No pre-scheduled on-call shifts.
  • Unit uses bedside shift reporting and secure communication tools.
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete facility-specific orientation and training requirements.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with strong general surgery and orthopedic skills looking for a night shift travel contract in Maryland. First-time travelers with at least 1 year of healthcare experience are also considered.
