Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Oncology Chemo Certified)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position on a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
  • Night shift with target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6.
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED).
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster situations.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings required.
  • Unit census typically 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census periods.
  • Systems used: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Experience in an inpatient setting required.
  • Med/Surg skills with specific competencies in:
    • Colostomy care
    • Accessing ports
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line blood draws
    • Peripheral line care/management
    • PICC line management
    • Heparin and insulin administration
    • Surgical drains
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
    • Isolation precautions
    • Wound care/Wound Vac
  • Chemotherapy administration capability required; traveler must be able to administer chemo if needed.
  • Prior travel experience not required; first-time travelers accepted.

Required Certifications

  • Oncology Certification (ONC) – must have or obtain prior to start.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

Preferred Certifications & Skills

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
  • Charge nurse experience.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN).

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 72 hours of start (minimum score 82%).
  • Background check within 6 months required.
  • Drug screening within 6 months required.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year required (with exceptions for past positives).
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
  • Physical exam and other health documents per travel agency standards.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules.
  • Photo for badge required prior to start.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8 hours).
  • Must comply with hospital policies, confidentiality agreements, and annual compliance training.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Must adhere to strict attendance policies; call-offs may lead to cancellation.
  • Floating to alternate inpatient units as needed.
  • Participation in emergency response teams during disasters.
  • Expected to work collaboratively with home unit staff to ensure patient coverage.

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with Med/Surg and oncology experience who is comfortable working nights, floating between units, and participating in emergency response efforts. Oncology chemo certification and the ability to administer chemotherapy are essential. Prior travel experience is not required.
