Description
Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Assignment on an Ortho/Trauma med/surg unit with approximately 20% ortho patients (hip and knee surgeries) and trauma patients (MVAs, shootings, stabbings, falls, etc.).
- High acuity, fast-paced environment requiring teamwork and strong communication skills.
- Unit staffing ratios: 1:5-6.
- Travelers must be flexible with weekend shifts and able to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Possibility of precepting students or being assigned students to shadow during the assignment.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required with resources provided.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
Required Qualifications
- Discipline: Registered Nurse (RN)
- Specialty: Medical Surgical
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty required.
- Licensure: Must have an Indiana RN license or compact license in hand, or have submitted fingerprint application package for Indiana license.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required (AHA or RQI accepted)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred
- Must be willing to comply with IU Health’s policy regarding Indiana RN licensure effective 11/30/2024 (Periop/OR RN’s and certain allied/ambulatory RNs exempt).
Prior Travel Experience

Additional Requirements
- Must be willing to work weekends as required by unit needs.
- Must be open to precepting and/or having students shadow during assignment.
- Must be flexible to float to other units as needed.
- Must comply with all IU Health background checks, health screenings, and facility-specific documentation requirements.
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella (no declinations accepted)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) required.
Documentation and Competency
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Unit competency exam required.
- Background checks including criminal, education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG within specified timeframes.
- Facility-specific orientation and compliance forms must be completed prior to start.
- Completion of mandatory IU Health training modules prior to orientation (22 modules covering safety, compliance, infection prevention, HIPAA, etc.).

- Call-in shift policies require making up missed shifts or adding them to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- IU Health is a teaching facility; travelers should be prepared for educational responsibilities.
- This is a travel/contract position with a 13-week duration.
