Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Ortho Specialty)

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with orthopedic experience for a fast-paced unit caring for orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, and post-surgical patients. The unit manages an average daily census of 37 patients with a 5-6:1 nurse-to-patient ratio (can flex to 7:1 in extreme cases).


Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Ortho)
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of orthopedic nursing experience (highest required)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted with EPIC experience
  • Certifications:
    • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Skills:
    • IV Start
    • Telemetry
  • Float Requirement: Must be willing to float to other med-surg units as needed
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required; missed weekends must be made up
  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts (36 or 48 hours offered)
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
  • RTO (Request Time Off):
    • No RTO allowed after booking or onsite workarounds
    • Maximum 7 days RTO allowed for auto-offer
    • No Easter or holiday RTO approved

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Charge Nurse experience
  • Level I Trauma experience

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Orthopedic and spine patients requiring attentive pain management
  • Covid patients are cared for on all units except ICU
  • Fast-paced environment

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and state-specific registry searches required within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or PAPR training required
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray as applicable
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Required immunizations or titers: Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules
  • Photo for badge and confidentiality agreement required prior to start
  • Medication safety training and competency exams as applicable

Additional Notes

  • Unit enforces strict attendance and RTO policies; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Candidates must be prepared for a fast-paced orthopedic unit with a focus on pain management and patient acuity
  • Floating to other med-surg units is mandatory to meet staffing needs
