Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical Neuro unit specializing in stroke and neurosurgery patient care. The unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and cares for patients with various neurological diagnoses such as epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and more.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • Completion of 2 or more travel assignments
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficient in IV start
  • Experience with telemetry
  • Skilled in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias

Job Details

  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Weekend Work: Required to work every other weekend; if a weekend shift is missed, it must be made up
  • Floating: Frequent floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units
  • Orientation: 36 hours
  • Uniform: Navy scrubs required
  • Systems Used: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
  • Scheduling: Preferred scheduling; block scheduling not guaranteed

Patient Population

  • Primarily stroke patients
  • Neurosurgery patients
  • Other neurological diagnoses including epilepsy and subdural hematomas

Required Compliance and Documentation

  • Background checks within 6 months
  • Drug screening within 6 months (9-panel acceptable)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation)
  • Immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Physical exam (per travel agency standards)
  • Medication safety training and other facility-specific mandatory education
  • Photo for badge (passport style, business attire, white background)
  • Confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and color blindness testing

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation
  • Floating may include COVID care units
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, neuro-focused MedSurg environment
  • Must be willing to complete all required facility-specific training and documentation prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg Neuro RNs with prior travel contract experience looking for a 13-week travel assignment in North Carolina.
