Unit Information

• Unit: K8 General Surgery
• Number of Beds: 44
• Number of Staff: 75
• Staffing:

  • Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 11 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
  • Night Shift: 1 charge nurse, 10 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
• Patient Ratios:

  • Day Shift: 1:6
  • Night Shift: 1:7
• Equipment Used: Telemetry, PCA pumps, wound vacs, Baxter IV pumps, TPN, tube feeds, urinary catheters
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience as an RN in Medical Surgical specialty, with Med Surg experience within the last year
• Telemetry competency and experience
• Experience with urology patient populations
• Ability to manage 6-7 patients depending on the shift

Typical Procedures Performed

• Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
• Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
• Wound vacs
• Tube feeds, PEG tubes, dobhoff tubes
• Nasogastric (NG) tubes
• Colostomies and urostomies
• Drains including biliary, JP, nephrostomy, urinary catheters, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
• Heparin drips and IV antibiotics
• Surgical cases including cholecystectomies, appendectomies, podiatry, bowel resections, plastics, urology surgeries, nephrectomies, hysterectomies, mastectomies, oral/maxillary, thyroidectomies, hernia repairs

Required Certifications and Licenses

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Additional Information

• Floating Area(s): Other med-surg areas
• Dress Code: Navy blue pants, navy blue or white scrub top and jacket (if needed), white undershirt (if needed). No sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, coats, or jackets allowed.
• Weekend Shifts: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
