Description

Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Surgical Services (Operating Room)
  • Shift: 4 shifts per week, 12-hour night shifts (6:30 PM - 7:00 AM) with holiday rotation
  • Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends
  • On-Call: No
  • Floating: Yes, may need to float within scope to meet facility needs or between like units/sister facilities
  • First-timers Accepted: Yes

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist with a minimum of 2 years of experience
  • Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
  • BLS certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
  • Busy, dynamic, nurse-driven environment with cutting-edge technology
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks (called off hours can be broken down to add up to 1 shift)
  • Open to block scheduling with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local radius: 60 miles
  • Locals may be considered on a case-by-case basis

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Background checks including:
    • SSN Trace
    • County and state criminal checks (including South Carolina)
    • Sex Offender Registry
    • National Criminal and FACIS 3
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers
  • Radiation badge process must be completed before starting floor work (may take 5-7 days to arrive)
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Competency exams required (including medication/pharmacology and OR competency)
  • Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination form)
    • Varicella (positive titer or vaccines)
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, MUSC Vaccination Declination form required
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30) or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)

Additional Notes

  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require assignment to emergency response teams
  • Candidates must be prepared to staff a wide variety of surgical cases supported by the Main OR
  • Facility is a Magnet designated department with a strong focus on quality and technology

This position is ideal for CSTs with at least 2 years of experience looking to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with diverse surgical cases and advanced technology. Night shift availability and flexibility to float are required.
