Job Summary
- Position: Registered Nurse (Progressive Care Unit - PCU)
- Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Facility Type: Level I Trauma, Teaching Facility
- Staffing Ratio: 1:4
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Cardiac PCU experience
- Trauma experience
- ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
- Med Surg experience
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- Experience with drips, IV starts, and sheath pulls
Unit Information
- Progressive Care Unit focusing on cardiovascular diagnoses including:
- Congestive heart failure
- Post-myocardial infarction
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- COPD
- Congenital heart defects
- Infective endocarditis
- Care for patients post-cath lab, pre-LVAD placement, heart/lung transplants, and pre-valve replacement
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Preferred
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification)
Licensure
- Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Indiana or applicable state (note: effective 11/30/24, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers)
Prior Travel Experience
- Prior travel experience is not required
- First-time travelers are accepted
Additional Requirements
- Must be flexible with weekend scheduling and floating assignments
- Must agree to precepting students or having students shadow during assignment
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport required
- Background checks, drug screening, and health documents must be current and compliant
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date required
- Fit mask test within 12 months required (specific respirators approved)
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not always required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year required
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (declinations not accepted)
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
- Skills checklist and competency exams required annually
Important Notes
- IU Health is a teaching facility; travel nurses must be open to educational roles
- Call-in shift policies require making up missed shifts or adding shifts to end of contract
- On-site PAPR available at Methodist and University hospitals with automatic approval
- On-site fit testing is limited and only available as a last resort at certain campuses
This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for experienced PCU nurses comfortable with cardiovascular patient care in a Level I trauma teaching hospital setting. Flexibility, strong clinical skills, and willingness to engage in educational roles are essential.
