Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Ortho Specialty)
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with orthopedic experience for a fast-paced unit caring for orthopedic, neuro spine, med-surg, and post-surgical patients. The unit manages an average daily census of 37 patients with a 5-6:1 nurse-to-patient ratio, flexing to 7:1 only in extreme cases.
Shift Details
- 12-hour day shifts (06:45 AM - 7:15 PM)
- Option for 36 or 48 hours per week
- Every other weekend required
- Float requirement: Must be willing to float to other med-surg units as needed
- Block scheduling options available (e.g., Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon)
- No call-offs or additional RTO allowed after booking; max 7 days RTO allowed for auto offer
- No holiday RTO approved
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Orthopedic and spine patients requiring attentive pain management
- Covid patients are cared for on all units unless in ICU
- Fast-paced environment
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of orthopedic nursing experience, with orthopedic experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- IV start skills
- Telemetry skills
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLS certification
- Charge nurse experience
- Level I trauma experience
Patient Care Ratios
- Typical ratio: 5-6 patients per nurse
- Can flex to 7:1 only in extreme cases
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months required
- Drug screening within 6 months required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year required (with exceptions for past positives)
- Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella required or documented immunity
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Physical exam and health documents per travel agency standards
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required
- Medication and pharmacology competency exams required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required (must score 82% or higher)
- Various facility-specific orientation and compliance trainings required (e.g., medication safety, confidentiality, hospital policies)
- Photo for badge required prior to start
Additional Notes
- Must be willing to float to other med-surg units as needed
- No RTO allowed after booking; strict attendance policies
- Must complete all required certifications and competencies before or shortly after start
- Fast-paced orthopedic unit requiring strong clinical skills and adaptability
