Job Opportunity: Neuro ICU Registered Nurse

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a 26-bed Neuro and Surgical ICU within a comprehensive stroke center.
  • Patient population includes Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, seizures, and critical care needs.
  • Responsibilities include ICP monitoring, ventilator management, seizure management, titrating drips, and managing invasive equipment including EVD and Zoll temperature management.
  • Staffing ratios typically 2:1, occasionally 3:1.
  • Shift: 12-hour nights.
  • Float requirement to other ICUs and intermediate units.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
  • Scheduling is per unit needs; no block scheduling.
  • Orientation: 24 hours.
  • Scrubs: Navy blue or white (not provided).
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years Neuro ICU experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Telemetry experience
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Skills in ICP Monitoring and Ventilator Management
  • Must be able to float to other ICU and intermediate units

Patient Diagnoses & Unit Details

  • Care for neurological patients including stroke, seizure, and other critical neuro conditions.
  • Experience with stroke management, ICP management, seizure management, and critical care patient management is ideal.

Equipment & Systems

  • Special equipment includes:
    • External Ventricular Drain (EVD) management
    • Ventilators
    • Zoll temperature management/artic sun
    • Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
  • Unit systems: Pyxis (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication).

Compliance & Health Requirements

  • Background checks including criminal, education verification, and state-specific registry checks required within 90 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Fit testing required (N95 or PAPR training).
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol.
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel).
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer or declination form)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care).
  • Must complete annual compliance training and medication safety modules.
  • Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
  • Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82%.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions.
  • Employment application must be uploaded.

Notes

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation.
  • Locals accepted with rate difference.
  • Scrubs are not provided.
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working night shifts in a high-acuity neurological ICU setting.
