Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical Neuro unit specializing in stroke and neurosurgery patient care. The unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and cares for patients with various neurological diagnoses such as epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and more.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg experience within the last year
- Telemetry experience
- 2 or more completed travel assignments
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- IV start proficiency
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
Work Details
- Shift: 12-hour day shifts (06:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
- Ratios: 1 nurse to 6 patients
- Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
- Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas, including possible COVID care units
- Scheduling: Preferred scheduling; call-offs require making up missed shifts within the same week or at contract end
- Orientation: 36 hours
- Scrubs: Navy color required
Unit & Patient Information
- Patient Diagnoses: Primarily stroke patients, neurosurgery, epilepsy, subdural hematomas, and other neurological conditions
- Unit Systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
- Census: Approximately 42 patients daily, 43 beds/rooms
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks within 6 months required
- Drug screening within 6 months required
- Immunizations and health documents required including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccinations
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination form
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- Competency exams including medication test, dysrhythmia/EKG exam (must score 82% or higher)
- Color blindness testing within 1 year
- Physical exam (per Aya Healthcare standards)
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments (confidentiality, hospital policies, orientation modules)
Additional Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to contract cancellation
- Floating and weekend work are mandatory and may require shift make-up
- Block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Must have Med/Surg experience specifically for this unit
- Navy scrubs required for the assignment
This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg Neuro RNs with prior travel contract experience looking for a 13-week travel assignment in North Carolina.
