Description
Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Teaching facility environment; travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- Call-in policy requires making up missed shifts during the pay period or adding shifts at the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be expected with support.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
- Patient population includes GI/Liver medical patients, ERCP, CAPD, pre-transplant, and chronic pancreatitis.
- First-time travelers are not accepted; candidates must have prior travel experience.
- Local candidates are not accepted.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, including experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience working with pediatric patients
- Proficient in IV start
Certifications (as applicable)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or equivalent.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or equivalent.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or equivalent.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only.
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as required.
- Chemotherapy certification - as required.
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment.
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles) - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no exemptions accepted.
- Mumps - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no exemptions accepted.
- Rubella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no exemptions accepted.
- Varicella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no exemptions accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required.
- TB testing (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; chest X-ray required if positive.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31). No declinations accepted.
- Annual TB questionnaire required.
Additional Requirements
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment with supervisory titles.
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and updated annually.
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests required.
- Color blindness testing required (Ishihara or equivalent).
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, safety, and compliance documents prior to start.
Important Notes
- Candidates must be willing to work in a teaching environment with potential precepting duties.
- Floating between units may be required.
- Indiana RN license holders will not be allowed to work past 11/30/2024 except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN roles.
- On-site PAPR is available at some locations with prior approval.
This position is ideal for experienced travel Registered Nurses comfortable with a dynamic, teaching hospital environment and flexible scheduling.
