Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Registered Nurse)

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

This is a challenging, fast-paced Labor and Delivery nursing position on a high-volume unit with over 300 births per month. Double labor assignments are common daily. The unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care. The unit also manages scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage procedures.


Key Details

  • Patient Ratios: 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Patient Volume: Approximately 20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
  • Shift Options: 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15), 36 or 48 hours offered (48-hour contracts may be difficult due to pace)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend, minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Float Requirement: Float as needed on a special maternity care high-risk OB unit
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Scrubs: Provided (blue)

Required Experience and Skills

  • Specialty Experience: Minimum 2 years preferred; 3 years preferred for comfort on this difficult unit
  • Prior Travel Experience: First-time travelers accepted if experienced in large, high-volume settings
  • Skills: Circulate in OR, sterile vaginal exams, competent in immediate newborn care
  • Certifications:
    • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
    • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Patient Population and Unit Details

  • Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum
  • High-risk maternity unit also cares for patients under 16 weeks
  • Obstetrical triage unit for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
  • Procedures include scheduled/unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage
  • Unit is very fast-paced and higher acuity than typical labor and delivery units
  • Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience

  • SBAR communication

Additional Notes

  • No call requirement
  • Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may lead to cancellation
  • Unit is difficult and fast-paced; double labor assignments are daily occurrences

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience circulating in the operating room (OR)
  • Competent in immediate newborn care

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background checks within 6 months
  • Drug testing within 6 months
  • Immunizations and health screenings including TB, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella, and seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
  • Required facility-specific documents and acknowledgments (e.g., confidentiality agreement, hospital policies)
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as required
  • Photo for badge (passport style, business attire, white background)
