Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a medical-surgical unit specializing in post-operative care of colorectal surgery patients.
  • Patient care includes those requiring negative-airflow rooms; candidates must be fit-tested for N95 masks or trained to use PAPR devices.
  • Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required.
  • Weekend shifts expected every other week; consecutive weekends may be needed based on operational needs.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with provided training.
  • Teaching facility environment: travel nurses may precept or have students shadow them.
  • Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Indiana
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Certifications (as applicable)

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or equivalent.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or equivalent.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or equivalent (if applicable).
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only (if applicable).
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as required.
  • Chemotherapy certification - as required.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring - as required.
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment.

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam completed within 12 months of start date.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • Fit test for approved respirators within 12 months.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year.
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Color blindness exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and education verification required.
  • Employment references: minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles.

Additional Information

  • First-time travel nurses are accepted.
  • Call-in shift policies require making up missed shifts or adding shifts at contract end.
  • Indiana RN license holders have restrictions effective 11/30/2024, with exceptions for perioperative and ambulatory specialties.
  • On-site fit testing available only as a last resort; PAPR use requires prior facility approval except at certain hospitals where it is automatically approved.
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation, competency exams, and safety acknowledgments required prior to start.
  • Candidates must be willing to complete mandatory training modules and facility-specific paperwork in a timely manner.
