Occupational Therapist - Acute Care

Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide individualized occupational therapy treatment for patients in an acute care setting. Treat patients of all ages with various diagnoses including orthopedic, neurological, and general medical disorders. Manage medically complex and often unstable patients, requiring critical thinking and ongoing assessment to adjust treatment plans.


Work Schedule

  • Monday to Friday, generally 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • 1-2 weekends per month required (weekends off before and/or after)
  • No on-call required

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform evaluations, treatment interventions, and documentation
  • Participate in team conferences and discharge planning
  • Use computerized charting systems and specialized equipment (e.g., UE Bioness, Dynavision)
  • Manage a caseload averaging 4-5 patients daily (21 beds total)
  • Supervise certified occupational therapy assistants, aides, and students as needed
  • Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to ensure patient safety and care coordination
  • Adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic schedule with frequent rescheduling and prioritization

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed Occupational Therapist in South Dakota
  • BLS Certification
  • Knowledge of acute care patient needs, including vital signs monitoring and medical equipment awareness
  • Ability to evaluate and treat medically complex patients with multiple diagnoses
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within the scope and standards of occupational therapy practice as outlined by state regulations and professional codes of ethics

  • Dress code: Business casual (no jeans), modest attire
  • Orientation and training provided for documentation and department-specific procedures
  • Local candidates preferred
