Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit Description
- Mixed acuity surgical oncology unit caring for PCU and Med Surg patients.
- Busy surgical floor with a focus on surgical oncology and related specialties.
- Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (may go up to 1:5).
- Rotating shifts (days, nights, or combination) based on unit needs.
- Scheduling reviewed every 4 weeks; no guaranteed fixed shifts.
- Orientation: 1 week of day shift orientation (Mon-Fri), followed by 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics.
- Diagnoses include:
- Surgical Oncology: breast, thyroid, melanoma.
- Hepatobiliary cancers: liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine.
- Colorectal cancers: colon, rectal.
- Plastics: reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma.
Clinical Responsibilities & Procedures
- Chemotherapy administration.
- Blood transfusions.
- IV antibiotics.
- Management of oncologic emergencies.
- Cytokine release syndrome care.
- Insulin and heparin drips.
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention and patient fall prevention protocols.
- Computerized charting system: EPIC.
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Required Background & Compliance Checks
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and state fingerprinting.
- Monthly monitoring through workforce screening systems.
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program.
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start.
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- TB questionnaire required.
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity via vaccines or positive titer.
- Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination series (declination accepted).
- Varicella immunity via vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Unit-specific competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (annual renewal required).
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment annually.
- License verification within 30 days of start.
- NURSYS verification for RN license.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

- No set/blocked scheduling offered.
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted but final schedule is balanced by staffing needs.
- Orientation includes both classroom and hands-on preceptor time.
- Emphasis on compliance with infection control and patient safety protocols.
This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses with oncology or surgical oncology experience seeking a travel contract in a busy PCU setting with varied shift opportunities.
