Description

Registered Nurse - Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Summary

  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts (days, nights, or combination) based on department needs.
  • Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes not guaranteed.
  • Patient population primarily includes:
    • Patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy
    • Soft tissue malignancy patients receiving diagnostics, chemotherapy, and symptom management
    • Symptom management related to disease progression or treatment
    • Management of comorbidities
  • Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience required.
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required.
  • Prior travel experience preferred (not required).
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:4.
  • Must be willing to float to units of equivalent or lower acuity.

Clinical Skills Required:

  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Accessing ports
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • IV starts
  • Assist with chest tube insertion/removal
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management
  • Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)

Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio required.
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit.
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP).

Equipment Used

  • B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
  • Bladder scanner
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Stryker beds

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
  • Education accreditation verification required (accredited nursing program).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season
  • Drug testing and immunization requirements apply unless fully remote.

Additional Requirements

  • Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Compliance with dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Annual acknowledgment of ethics, compliance, and safety policies.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Proficient in arterial line management
  • Skilled in blood product administration
  • Experienced in central line and PICC line care and management
  • Ability to assist with chest tube insertion and removal
  • Competent in managing High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Notes

  • Candidates must be flexible with floating to other units as needed.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Fingerprinting and background checks are time-sensitive and must be completed prior to start.
  • Candidates should be prepared for a thorough credentialing and onboarding process.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology med-surg setting with a focus on complex patient care and advanced nursing skills.
