Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Oncology Chemo Certified

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

Seeking Med/Surg skilled Registered Nurses for a Medical Surgical/Oncology unit primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.

Patient Population & Diagnoses

  • General medical-surgical diagnoses
  • Oncology patients requiring chemotherapy/biotherapy administration (IV, PO, injection)
  • Common conditions: AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain management, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, Heparin drips

Shift & Staffing

  • Night shift
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
  • Every other weekend required
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED)
  • Must participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments during catastrophic events or disasters

Unit Details

  • Daily census approximately 42 patients
  • Ratios may increase during high census periods
  • Orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
  • Uniform: Navy blue and white scrubs
  • Documentation and communication systems: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Oncology experience with a minimum of 2 years, including experience within the last year
  • Med/Surg experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Chemotherapy (CHEMO) certification and ability to administer chemotherapy
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience in an inpatient setting
  • Skills in accessing ports
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line blood draws
  • PICC line management
  • Management of chest tubes, specifically Emerson/Pleur-evac

Preferred Qualifications

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
  • Charge nurse experience

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings required
  • Shifts called out must be made up with rescheduled shifts
  • Must complete required orientation and training modules
  • Participation in disaster response teams (Storm/Hurricane) may be required
  • Compliance with facility-specific policies and documentation requirements

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start (or proof of past positive with appropriate documentation)
  • Required immunizations and titers including Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Drug screening within 6 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Background checks and education verifications as applicable

Summary

This is a travel contract RN position for a Medical Surgical/Oncology unit requiring oncology chemo certification and Med/Surg skills. The role involves night shifts with a 1:6 ratio, floating to similar units, and participation in emergency response teams. Candidates must have at least 2 years of inpatient experience and be able to administer chemotherapy. First-time travelers are welcome.
