Description
Registered Nurse (Adult Medical Specialty)
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Adult Medical Specialty Unit with 56 beds (private and semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:4-5 (07:00–23:00)
- 1:5-6 (23:00–07:30)
- Free charge nurse on each floor (does not take patient assignment)
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) assist with vital signs, accu-checks, bladder scans, and ADLs; PCT ratio approximately 1:8-10
- House-wide telemetry monitored remotely; RNs can view strips on monitors or computers (Phillips brand)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Acute care general medicine patients including:
- Cellulitis
- Sepsis
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Syncope
- Anemia
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Acute respiratory failure
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Behavioral health and addictions
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
- BLS (AHA) certification required
Experience & Skills
- Required: Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, chest tubes
- Preferred: EPIC electronic health record experience
- Preferred: Prior travel nursing experience on a MedSurg floor
- Candidates with Level I trauma center experience may be considered without prior travel experience if EPIC experience is present
Clinical Information
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Common drips used: Heparin, Lasix
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, and suctioning
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shifts: Three 12-hour shifts (7:00–19:30)
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling/block scheduling via electronic system
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days; Fri/Sat for nights)
- Holiday requirement: Varies
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotation to other acute care general medicine areas such as nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, oncology
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts on unit-specific orientation
- Dress code: Any color professional scrubs; no visible tattoos or piercings except ears
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required for all panels
Summary of Requirements
- License: Active Illinois RN license (or application initiated)
- Certifications: BLS (AHA)
- Experience:
- Minimum experience with central lines, tracheostomies, chest tubes
- Preferred EPIC experience
- Preferred prior travel nursing experience on MedSurg floor (or Level I trauma center experience with EPIC)
- Prior travel experience: Preferred but not strictly required if trauma center experience and EPIC skills are present
