Job Description

• Must be able to scrub and circulate basic, intermediate, and advanced interventional radiology (IR) procedures.
• Experience with GE and Siemens imaging equipment preferred.
• Neuro IR experience preferred for RNs; RTs require manager approval if lacking Neuro IR experience.
• Neuro IR procedures include strokes, embolization, DSA, WADA test, spinal angios (not performed at night).
• General IR procedures include kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty (not at night), central line/PICC/ports, fistulograms, IVC filter, nephrostomy tubes, nephroureteral stents, peripheral leg cases, coil embolization, thoracentesis/paracentesis; CT room supported by IR for cryos, CT biopsies, drains (not at night); AAA intervention experience preferred.
• Department staffed 24/7.
• Patient population: Adults only, no pediatrics.
• Average patient volume: 40-50 patients per day.

Required Licensure and Certifications

• RN: BLS, ACLS
• RT(R): ARRT certification, BLS, Wisconsin state license

Required Experience

• IR experience required.
• Neuro IR experience required for RN.
• Manager approval required if RT does not have Neuro IR experience.
• First-time travelers accepted if they have IR experience.
• Travelers with 1 year of experience accepted for RN and RT(R).

Skills

• RN: Experience with listed patient types and procedures, able to administer sedation unless anesthesia is involved, monitor and chart patients.
• RT(R): Ability to scrub and pan simultaneously, experience with general IR cases preferred. Comfort with charging/coding for procedures preferred but not required.

Orientation

• 1-2 weeks orientation with a preceptor and competency check-off.

Scheduling and Call

• Weekend rotation: Call.
• RT(R) call schedule:

  • Weekday call (Mon-Thurs): 1 call shift per week, ends next day at 7:00 AM.
  • Weekend call (Fri-Sun): Once every 5th weekend, ends Monday at 7:00 AM.
• RN call schedule:

  • Weekday call (Mon-Thurs): 1 call shift per week, ends next day at 7:00 AM.
  • Weekend call (Fri-Sun): Once every 5th or 6th weekend, ends Monday at 7:00 AM.
• Call response time: 30 minutes.
• Travelers only take Neuro IR call if they have Neuro IR experience; otherwise, only General IR call.
• If overnight shift, no call required.
• Holiday call currently not required but may change.
• Shift times when on call:

  • General IR: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Neuro IR: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
• Shift flexibility: Manager open to altering shift lengths (e.g., four 10-hour shifts instead of five 8-hour shifts).

Support on Unit

• Receptionist/HUC: Two coordinators.
• Lead Tech: Two leads.
• Two techs per exam room, sometimes three for involved cases.
• Tech specialists available.
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7.
• Hospitalist available 24/7.
• CNA/Transporter available 24/7; may assist with patient transport.

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC experience preferred for RNs.
• IV pumps: Alaris.
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis.
• PACS: Change Healthcare.
• Imaging equipment: Siemens and GE (experience preferred).
• Injector: MedRad.
• Other equipment (experience not required): IVUS, Ultrasound (GE), Laser, Bovie (for some port removals), Angiojet.
