Registered Nurse - Med/Surg

Job Description

Under limited supervision, provides direct patient care and plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care for Medical-Surgical patients. Ensures continuity of care across shifts and maintains effective relations with other departments. Performs nursing functions including medication administration, patient assessment, and documentation. Works rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

• Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate courtesy and cooperation with co-workers, patients, and visitors.
• Provide high-quality nursing care by planning, organizing, and directing patient care on the unit.
• Stay calm and resourceful in emergencies.
• Communicate patient needs and unit issues to physicians, nurses, and staff.
• Use data to prioritize patient physical, psychological, educational, and discharge needs.
• Identify problems and guide personnel toward solutions.
• Create a positive work environment that supports growth and job satisfaction.
• Administer medications and intravenous solutions accurately and safely.
• Maintain accurate and timely patient records.
• Ensure necessary supplies and equipment are available.
• Implement physician orders and nursing care plans using professional judgment.
• Evaluate patient and family responses and adjust care plans accordingly.
• Prioritize workload effectively.
• Support and enforce infection control policies.
• Participate in orientation and ongoing training.
• Maintain professional patient confidentiality.
• Follow hospital policies and procedures.
• Work independently with limited supervision.
• Attend required meetings and in-services.

Required Qualifications

• Current Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum of 2 years acute care nursing experience.
• Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
• Mandatory Abuse Reporter Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English well.
