Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
  • Refusal to float to other units may result in contract termination.
  • Teaching facility environment; travel nurses must be willing to precept or have students shadow them.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Trauma Level I experience required.
  • Prior local candidates are not accepted.
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
  • Charge nurse coverage may be required with training and resources provided.
  • Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients.
  • Unit focuses on progressive care for cardiovascular patients, including post-cath lab, pre-LVAD, heart/lung transplant, and valve replacement care.
  • Floating to Med-Surg, PCU, ICU units may be required with support.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients.
  • Certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Skillset: Sheath pulls and other PCU-related skills.

Prior Travel Experience

  • Not explicitly required; first-time travelers accepted.

Required Documents & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
  • Background checks including 7-year history, criminal, sex offender, and education verification.
  • State license verification within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required.
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Preferred but not required.
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; chest x-ray if positive.
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit-specific competency.
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent).
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles.
  • Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days.

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/24, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
  • Travelers must be willing to float and accept weekend shifts as needed.
  • Orientation includes completion of mandatory safety and compliance modules prior to start.
  • On-site fit testing is limited; documentation of fit test must be provided.
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned based on operational needs.
