Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU

Location: Jefferson, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a focus on telemetry and ventilator care. The position involves working fixed day shifts on a weekend schedule (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) with an option to contract for additional shifts (Friday through Monday). Float duties are required, including working as a monitor tech or in other competent areas when patient assignments are light.


Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patient Diagnoses: Respiratory distress, cardiovascular disorders, substance abuse, surgical patients requiring close monitoring
  • Special Procedures: Telemetry, occasional arterial lines, BiPAP, ventilators
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Unit Systems: Meditech (medication, documentation), Omnicell (medication dispensing)
  • Scheduling: Blocked scheduling with potential changes based on unit needs
  • Orientation: 24 hours
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Ventilator experience
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
  • Must be willing to float to other areas or work as a monitor tech when needed (rare)
  • Prior travel experience is not required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Charge nurse experience preferred

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, and national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit testing for N95 mask required (PAPR training not accepted in this facility)
  • Immunizations and titers required: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccine or approved exemption
  • TB testing: Negative PPD, QGold, or T-Spot within 1 year; if positive, clear chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire required
  • Annual compliance and facility-specific education modules required
  • Medication competency exam and color blindness testing required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required with a passing score of 82% or higher (3 attempts allowed with remediation process)
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care positions

  • Interview availability may be requested within 72 hours of submission
  • Candidates must complete facility-specific orientation and education modules prior to start
  • Badge photo requirements: passport-style photo on white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses
  • Flu season vaccination or exemption required annually with mask-wearing if exempted
  • Must comply with facility dress code and policies
  • Must complete medication safety training and other required competencies via online learning platforms
